Balance Exercises for Seniors

Building balance and strength is a very important exercise which needs to be included in fitness programs for all ages, especially adults and seniors. Warrior 2 Pose

On the left we have an image of John demonstrating the Warrior 2 Pose. This is a standing pose that opens the hips and strengthens your legs. This in important pose to develop balance and stability.

Performing this exercise, you must extend your arms out, which encourages you to relax your shoulders and keep your neck soft, while also promoting strong shoulders and arms. Also bend your knees if you feel confident to do so.

Including a Warrior 2 Pose in your exercise program can improve circulation, stretches your hips, groins and shoulders, opens up the chest and lungs and builds stamina and helps to improve concentration. It also promotes good posture and spinal alignment along with core strength.

Each week various warrior poses from heel to toe are included in the Fitness4Fun exercise class.

Lightning Warrior Pose

On the left, John is demonstrating the Lightning Warrior Pose. This pose is an excellent pose for the upper back, it will also open the hamstring, works on shoulder tightness, strengthens the core and your quadriceps.

To begin this pose, start by standing with one foot forward. Lean forwards with your left foot and reach your Arms back along your sides and spread your fingers wide. Swap the legs after a few minutes to ensure both sides of your body is stretched.

This shape has many benefits for your body. It opens the back hamstring, work on your shoulder tightness, strengthen your core and your quadriceps, plus it is great for your back

The pose is important for maintaining bone strength and bone health and for maintaining good posture.

Single Leg Balance

Below, John is demonstrating the Single Leg Balance pose. The single leg balance pose is a great exercise for

The balance exercise strengthens your feet, ankles, knees and hips works on maintaining posture, alignment and helps the mind to focus better thus helping on improving concentration.

To complete this pose, stand with your feet hip width apart and your weight equally distributed on both of your legs. Place your hands on your hips. Lift your left leg off the floor and bend it back at the knee

These Balance exercises are included on each of the weekly classes to help prevent falls and fractures.
